Background : In modern era, there are many products used as hair dye. Hair dye preparation is used in hair make up to color it so that it looks appealing. One of the plants with pigments is temulawak rhizome (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.), the pigment contained is called curcumoid. The objectives : The objectives of this study is to determine if the pigment in temulawak can be formulated into hair dye and if the pigment can produce the best color at a spesific concentration. Research method : The research method is maceration, the formulation making was done by adding temulawak extract as a dye with 4 variant concentration at 0%, 5%, 15% and 25%. Pirogalol as color stimulator, xanthan gum as thickener and aquades as solvent. The ovaluation of hair dye preparations are included testing: organoleptic, pH, irritation, stability of the resulting color, stability to washing, stability to the sun and preference. Results : The study results to the evaluation of organolepctic test shows that the higher the concentration added, the stronger the color produced, the best pH was found in F3. Irritation test on hair dye showed no reaction to all the formulations tested, the color stability produced stated that the higher the extract concentration, the darker the color produced at the end. The best formulation is F4 due to the color stability test to washing. Stability test to the sun shows no changes. The most preferred formulation is F4. The pigment found in temulawak rhizome (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.) can be formulated into hair dye gel. Conclusion : The formulation that produces the best color is at 25% concentration of temulawak rhizome extract (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.) that gives brownish yellow color.
