LEMAHNYA KEMAMPUAN SISWA SMAN 1 JAYA KABUPATEN ACEH JAYA DALAM MENULIS KALIMAT BAHASA INGGRIS: PENYEBAB DAN SOLUSI

Penelitian ini memiliki dua tujuan, pertama untuk menemukan penyebab lemahnya kemampuan menulis kalimat bahasa Inggris yang dirasakan oleh siswa SMAN 1 Jaya Kabupaten Aceh Jaya dan kedua untuk menawarkan solusi atas kesulitan yang dihadapi yaitu memperkenalkan sebuah aplikasi bernama Edmodo untuk digunakan dalam pembelajaran English writing. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh dari angket yang disebarkan kepada siswa, diketahui bahwa kesulitan mereka dalam menulis bahasa Inggris adalah penentuan tenses 94.87%, pembentukan kalimat 79.48% dan pemilihan kata 48.71%. Selanjutnya untuk melihat kemampuan menulis khususnya tentang grammar, vocabulary dan content, mereka diberikan dua kali test dengan tema yang sama. Test pertama berupa pre-test dilaksanakan secara konvensional dan test kedua, post-test, dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan aplikasi Edmodo. Terdapat peningkatan kemampuan menulis yang didapatkan dengan menggunakan Edmodo pada katagori “sangat baik†mencapai 23% dimana sebelumnya adalah 0%. Katagori nilai “baik†mengalami perubahan dari 10 % menjadi 67%. Sementara itu nilai “cukup†berkurang dari 74% menjadi 2% dan katagori nilai “kurang†berubah dari 16% menjadi 8%. Hasil temuan dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa penyebab utama lemahnya kemampuan English writing siswa adalah tenses dan aplikasi Edmodo dapat digunakan sebagai media pendukung untuk menunjang usaha peningkatan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris.

This research has two main purposes, the first was to find out the weaknesses in English writing felt by the students of SMAN 1 Jaya, Aceh Jaya District and second one was to propose a solution by introducing an application which could be used for writing activity of English named Edmodo. Based on obtained data from questionnaire which were distributed to those students, it was found that their difficulties in writing English is determining the tenses namely 94.87%, sentence structure 79.48% and words selection is 48.71%. Furthermore, to measure their writing skills, especially regarding grammar, vocabulary and content of writing, they were given two tests in the same theme. The first test or the pre-test was carried out conventionally and the second test as the post-test was held by using the application of Edmodo. There was an increase in writing ability obtained by applying Edmodo in “very good†category reaching 23% where previously it was 0%. The good value category experienced a change from 10% to 67%. Meanwhile the “sufficient†value was reduced from 74% to 2% and the “poor†value category changed from 16% to 8%. The findings research can be concluded that the main cause of students’ weaknesses in English writing skills is tenses and the Edmodo application can be used as a solution to support this English language skill improvement.
